Summary of Position

Under general supervision of designated supervisor, lead, assign, and perform work independently or as part of a crew, related to the overall operation of the Grounds and Events department. Responsible for providing excellent customer service, communicating directly and effectively with stakeholders, coordinating equipment, materials, and other resources to meet customer requests. Serve as a department leader and mentor to all Grounds and Events staff.
UNH Facilities is a 24/7/365 operation and this position has responsibilities related to campus safety, emergency response, event support, and wintertime snow operations. Due to the nature of our business, employees may be asked to flex schedules and/or respond to request outside of normal working hours in order to meet the demands of the University. This may include early morning, evenings, weekends and holiday work as needed.

1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Valid motor vehicle operator’s license and DOT medical care.
3. Three years of related experience in all aspects of grounds maintenance and landscaping.
4. New Hampshire Pesticide Applicator’s License and New Hampshire Landscape Certificate highly desired.
5. Mechanical skill and knowledge of motorized equipment.
6. Knowledge of applicable codes/ordinances.
7. Ability to inspect equipment, determine malfunction and make necessary repairs.
8. Knowledge and ability to use computers, tablets, smart phones, and software systems to perform work duties.
9. Ability to report to work under emergency weather conditions and work a flexible schedule that may include nights and weekends during emergency and weather events.
10. Sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of this job, including heavy work with exposure to inclement weather conditions for prolonged periods of time.
11. Must be able to wear and use appropriate personal protective equipment as necessary.
12. Solid interpersonal and communication skills, both verbally and written, to effectively communicate with customers, team members, contractors and supervisors.

Duty/Responsibility

Campus landscape and customer service: Perform functions related to the daily upkeep of campus grounds and landscape, including but not limited to: mowing, whipping, irrigation, aeration, mulching, weeding, pruning, aeration, over seeding, leaf cleanup, plantings, tree removal, and turf maintenance. Assist in weed eradication. Maintain cleanliness of grounds including litter control, leaf removal and sweeping of paved areas. Operate equipment to perform above duties including tractors, one ton dump trucks, lawnmowers, line trimers, blowers, sand/salt spreaders and snow blowers, mini-loaders. Respond to work orders and requests related to grounds landscape. Provide exceptional customer service by responding to requests in a timely manner, communicating status to the customer, and following up when the work is complete. Using the work management software, maintain accurate records of work completed, materials used, and time expended.

Duty/Responsibility

Project work and/or general grounds work: Perform campus project work assigned to the Grounds and Events department, to include but not limited to: campus wide cleanup projects, moving assignments, and special events set up/breakdown. Provide assistance as needed to the overall grounds department (and support of other facilities organizations as needed) with public works projects and athletic turf maintenance.

Duty/Responsibility

Winter snow operations: Participate in the planning, scheduling, and performance of winter snow removal/plowing. Maintain a plow route as necessary. Participate in the on-call rotation for snow call back and respond to snow/ice calls, including during off hours, as needed.

Leadership and mentorship to the Facilities division. Participate, support, and demonstrate Facilities Forward concepts and contribute to a positive work culture. Demonstrate leadership qualities during work activities. Mentor, develop, and train apprentices and new employees. Oversee and provide feedback about contractors working on campus as needed.

Duty/Responsibility

Safety and training: Follow all safety practices/ policies/procedures, techniques and precautions in performance of duties. Keep current on all required safety trainings, code/license updates and any certifications required. Continuously seek out professional development opportunities that will benefit the University and your technical skills to stay current on technical skills and be knowledgeable of best practices, future trends and technologies.
