Media Suite & Events Production Manager

Job Description

The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg Center in Washington, D.C. seeks an experienced Media Suite & Events Production Manager to provide leadership and oversight for audio-visual projects in our media suite and event spaces. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of audio-visual design, equipment, integration, operations, and maintenance in a higher education setting. This role involves collaborating with IT/AV leaders and the IT/AV Production Team to execute broadcast-level productions, while developing plans for venue upgrades and evaluating new technology for future production enhancements.


The successful candidate will be highly organized, detail-oriented, and have strong communication skills. They will work closely with a proactive team focused on providing excellent customer service to staff, faculty, students, and other clients. Flexibility is essential, as the role requires the ability to work outside normal hours, including evenings and weekends as needed.

A bustling hub of collaboration, dialogue and discovery right in the heart of the nation’s Capital, the Hopkins Bloomberg Center hosts daily in-person, hybrid and virtual programming from all corners of the John Hopkins University community. The Center frequently partners with prominent domestic and international organizations, as well as government entities and multilateral institutions, to create programming that brings Johns Hopkins policy expertise, research, and data to the forefront of the policymaking conversation in Washington and beyond.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Media Suite and Event Production Management (75%)

  • Manages eight media suite spaces, including four distance learning web conferencing rooms, two audio podcasting rooms, one large video studio and one small video studio.
  • Manages production staffing and video/audio systems for HBC event spaces outside of the theater.
  • Hires and manages full-time and part-time team members needed for media suite and event space video and audio productions outside of the theater.
  • Provides training to IT/AV full-time and part-time staff on the use of production technologies and HBC production workflow in the media suite and event spaces outside the theater.
  • Approves event production resources as requested in the 25Live scheduling system based on available staff, room availability and resources.
  • Approves Media Suite scheduling based on available staff, room availability and resources.
  • Creates and updates a staffing and resources calendar for approved productions in media suite and event spaces outside of the theater.
  • Participates in the evaluation of AV vendor proposals for the media suite and event spaces outside of the theater.
  • Provides Tier 1 troubleshooting, upgrades and updates for production equipment.
  • Acts as point of contact for media suite vendor work and assists in the coordination of secondary services essential to vendor on-site work such as product delivery, security, credentials, vendor work hours of operation, storage requirements, etc.
  • Develops on-going vendor relationships with local and regional AV contractors, design teams and project managers.
  • Ensures deadlines and all final project specifications are met before project closure.
  • Understands AV standards, evolving technologies, and applicable codes.
  • Understands general knowledge of AV system design, configuration and scalability.
  • Provides metrics and reports for leadership to evaluate the appropriate use of production spaces and staff resources.
  • Participates in professional development opportunities, remaining current with industry standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.


IT/AV Leadership and Production Team Support (25%)

  • Participates in IT/AV leadership and Production Team leadership endeavors.
  • Works directly with IT/AV Director and all IT/AV managers, including Video and Audio Production Managers and IT Managers to ensure that consistent customer support, staffing and team management policies and procedures are upheld.
  • Properly escalates issues to leadership and works to resolve complex problems.
  • Other duties as necessary.


Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must have working and operational knowledge of all AV equipment commonly used for production support, including consumer and professional electronics. Includes but is not limited to,
    • Robust multimedia and post-production computers and servers (Windows and Mac operating systems).
    • General knowledge of video and audio studio layout, functionality and crew roles.
    • Working Knowledge of devices and technologies for used for professional television & video production, systems and monitoring.
  • Broadcast Video Switching Systems.
  • Broadcast Video Camera & Shading Systems.
  • Broadcast Intercom and Interruptible Foldback (IFB) Devices.
  • Digital audio recorders, microphones and mixing consoles.
  • Video and audio routing systems (digital and analog).
  • Teleprompter systems.
  • Video Studio Floor Management.
  • Web conferencing systems and software for educational settings.
  • Zoom, Panopto and Canvass Support.
  • Digital whiteboards.
  • Video and web cameras.
  • Crestron Touch Panel Systems.
  • Livestreaming and broadcasting technologies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of general A/V installation techniques.
  • Computer troubleshooting skills and working knowledge of computer networks.


Physical Requirements

  • Occasional weekend and evening hours required.
  • Lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Able to work in a standing and seated position.
  • Able to complete work using a ladder for lighting adjustments.



Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience.
  • Three years of related experience, with some supervisory or lead experience preferred.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum of three years related Audio-Visual experience working in an educational environment. More years of experience preferred.
  • Three years of experience with Audio-Visual live event support.
  • Leadership experience, education or certifications preferred.
