Department/Division Purpose (brief description of main function):
The purpose of the TRIO Upward Bound Program, a federally funded grant for disadvantaged youth, is to generate in eligible high school participants the skills and motivation necessary to complete a program of secondary education and to enter and graduate in a program of postsecondary education.
Job Summary Statement (brief summary of overall responsibility of position):
This coaching position will assist the TRIO Upward Bound programs and its student participants. The Lead Career and Academic Coach works directly with students in assessing their academic skills and demonstrating mastery of career and college readiness. This individual also serves as a part of the TRIO Upward Bound professional team in advising, coordinating and facilitating enrichment workshops and activities. Travel to off campus sites and professional development with weekend and overnight stays will be necessary.This position has been identified as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) in accordance with Department of Education guidelines. As a CSA, the incumbent is required to report crimes that they become aware of to the Department of Public Safety and must attend related annual training.
In accordance with Colorado Revised Statutes 24-50-135, this position has been exempted from the State Personnel System.
Job Duties
Essential Functions
- Specialize in the case management and training of all UB students at Central High School, East High School and Dolores Huerta Preparatory High School to ensure they gain the knowledge, skills and competencies for workforce and college readiness during their four years of high school to meet grant objectives.
- Develop opportunities and provide training and support to Upward Bound staff and students on career exploration.
- Facilitate hands-on workshops on the topics of secondary, postsecondary and workforce readiness. Assist students with identifying strengths, interests and abilities and explain how these areas relate to majors and careers.
- Initiate and coordinate student advising process for new and continuing students. Provide academic advising services to maximize persistence of students in their chosen program of study.
- Assist students in developing secondary and postsecondary plans to ensure on time high school graduation, college admission, and plans for post-secondary completion. Advise and educate parents and students during parent/student conferences on student progress, program requirements, and student’s academic goals.
- Coordinate, facilitate and serve as staff chaperone and supervisor during college campus visits, service-learning events, cultural enrichment activities, and summer components provided to program participants both in-state and out-of-state. Travel to off campus sites with week-long, weekend and overnight stays required.
- Initiate, prepare, and maintain accurate accounting records for all expenditures related to advising, recruitment and retention, and service-learning activities. Ensure that guidelines outlined in the federal TRIO program regulations, EDGAR, OMB Super Circular, and procedures set by CCCS and PCC are strictly followed.
- Assist Recruitment and Retention Coach and student board officers with the initiation of monthly reports and maintain accurate budget records for the Student Advisory Council club, a sanctioned PCC student club.
- Train and co-supervise tutors at target high schools. Career and Academic Coach will also assist Recruitment and Retention Coach with all recruitment and retention activities and be responsible for initial and ongoing training of UB staff in career and academic resources.
- Coordinate and facilitate workshops and events for all participants to gain skills and knowledge in the areas of leadership, character development, financial literacy, lifelong learning, cultural diversity, career planning, and college preparation. Develop curriculum and deliver classroom instruction on these topics. Assist with the planning, coordinating and facilitation of all academic and summer program components for participants as outlined in grant and any other duties as required by management.
- Establish, coordinate and maintain contact with all area high schools, colleges, universities and community partners. Build strong, positive working relationships and partnerships to effectively provide intentional and intrusive advising services for UB participants. Stay apprised of best practices, strategies, and skillsets required to effectively communicate with all grant partners and all UB participants.
- Work with TRIO department staff to assist with the interview, evaluation and selection of qualified participants for the program. This includes reviewing application documentation to help determine UB student’s eligibility for entrance into the program as mandated in EDGAR and the Federal Register for TRIO programs.
- Enter student and program advising data into the Student Access database. Assist with the longitudinal data collection for all current and prior participants to be included in the Annual Performance Report for submission to the United States Department of Education. Prepare and present monthly statistical student and program data for staff meetings and quarterly reports for Grant Partner Steering Committee reporting purposes and real-time decision making.
- Active participation in community/professional organizations in support of TRIO Upward Bound Program’s students, parents, objectives and partnerships, such as but not limited to, Grant Partners Steering Committee, Junior Board Mentor Program, Student Advisory Council and Parent Advisory Council.

Minimum Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution or equivalent.
Licenses or Certificates:
- Possession of, or ability to obtain a current a state driver’s license
Experience:
- At least two years of experience in academic advising of disadvantaged first-generation high school students knowledge and experience of secondary education systems
- Experience in the delivery of one-on-one and group setting presentations
Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Proficient use with Microsoft Office, Outlook and database applications.
- Knowledge and ability to adhere and ensure confidentiality in accordance with USDE, FERPA and secondary school systems.
- Knowledge and ability to gather and present statistical data
Schedule – infrequent weekend and evening hours may be required
