Community Health Educator

Job Description

We are seeking a Community Health Educator to work under the Department of Oncology, Community programs. In this role, the candidate will implement education and outreach activities to the populations of Maryland and the District of Columbia.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Translates print materials, including study and educational materials, into language understandable to non-medical populations.
  • Conducts educational sessions to teach members of the community the basics of cancer prevention and control.
  • Collaborates with community-based organizations to convene advisory groups to review educational materials and activities, identify opportunities to conduct outreach and education activities to ethnic and racial minorities and the general public.
  • Disseminates health and cancer education materials to public, health care providers, and community organizations/partners.
  • Identifies evidence-based strategies and promising practices to promote cancer prevention, screening, and early detection and disseminates them to community organizations and partners.
  • Works closely with staff of the center to plan, implement, and evaluate community outreach and education activities.


Additional Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities / Competencies

  • Interest in health education, health promotion, or another health-related field.
  • Basic knowledge of the principles of health behaviors, cancer and health disparities, community outreach and education, and cancer/health disparities.
  • Ability to adapt instructional skills for members with learning impairment and low literacy skills.
  • Ability to engage community based organizations to organize, plan and conduct educational and outreach activities.
  • Ability to demonstrate the skills for planning, developing, and implementing health education and outreach activities.
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills to develop and deliver culturally competent health education materials and programs.
  • Must have good organizational skills and be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Internet, type and enter data, and conduct phone and face-to-face interviews.
  • Ability to interact and communicate with members from diverse backgrounds in a culturally appropriate manner.
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple competing priorities and to meet deadlines.
  • Be organized, an active listener and detail oriented.


Working Conditions

  • Must be willing to do some evening and weekend hours.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.
  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
