About the Department

The Environmental First Year (ENVFY) Program at North Carolina State University (NC State) caters to undergraduate students with a strong interest in the environment and sustainability. Its mission is to prepare students for productive careers related to environmental conservation and sustainability and to develop environmentally conscious citizens who will contribute to a rapidly changing world.

Through the ENVFY program, students learn about diverse approaches to study environmental issues and are exposed to a wide variety of disciplines and careers. The program also cultivates NC State’s motto of ‘Think and Do’ by balancing critical thinking with hands-on learning. Undergraduate students enrolled in the program complete a two-semester sequence that is a stepping stone for various environmentally-focused degree programs throughout the university, particularly majors in the Colleges of Natural Resources (CNR), Sciences (COS), Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), Education (CED), and Humanities and Social Sciences (CHASS).

The cross-college ENVFY program relies on a collaborative approach by integrating support and expertise from both the ENVFY personnel and disciplinary advisors and faculty. The ENVFY program is administratively housed in the CNR Academic Affairs Office and has a strong partnership with the Office of University Interdisciplinary Programs. CNR and its ENVFY partner colleges offer high-quality academic programming throughout the whole student experience and place a strong emphasis on enriching student development by offering and promoting development and engagement opportunities that complement classroom learning.

Essential Job Duties

The ENVFY Associate Director provides program leadership for student recruitment, engagement, and academic success, and is expected to work collaboratively with a wide variety of administrative and academic units across the university and with external partners. This individual is also expected to foster an environment that is supportive and welcoming of all students and to work proactively to promote community, collaboration, innovation, and environmental sustainability. This position reports to the Director of the ENVFY program and to the CNR Director of Student Success and Academic Services.

High Quality First Year Academic Advising 
  • Lead the ENVFY Advising Collaborative Team, a group of advisors from ENVFY and environmentally-related disciplines.
  • Provide high-quality cross-curricular academic advising support to undergraduate students in the Environmental First Year Program regarding major exploration, academic requirements, course selection and registration, and personal enrichment.
  • Be proficient in the requirements of the curricula and career options for all environmentally related programs at NC State, and provide educational opportunities for other ENVFY network advisors to gain similar proficiencies.
  • Swiftly transition students into their desired majors by working closely with directors of undergraduate programs, academic advisors, and other departmental representatives.
  • Promote the use of advising technologies available at NC State by the ENVFY advising team.
  • Serve as a point of contact for cross-boundary advising questions and concerns that arise in the ENVFY network.

Student Academic Success and Engagement Programming
  • Develop and oversee the implementation of a robust program of curricular, co-curricular, and engagement activities and resources designed to support ENVFY students in the successful transition to University life as well as equipping all ENVFY students for academic success.
  • Lead the curation and high-quality instruction of ENV 100: Success in the Environmental First Year, a high impact course that aims to provide ENVFY students with the tools, skills, and knowledge necessary to set them up for success at NC State.
  • Engage the Advising Collaborative team in regularly reviewing and updating ENV 100 curriculum and assignments, and in developing and promoting complementary high-impact experiences and engagement opportunities.
  • Provide ENVFY students with regular communications regarding academic success, upcoming events, and opportunities relevant to ENVFY students.
  • Collaborate with academic programs and the Advancement offices of participating colleges to facilitate opportunities for alumni, donors, and industry partners to mentor students during their academic journey.

ENVFY Administration and Leadership 
  • Lead efforts to develop and implement ENVFY student recruitment strategies, which includes coordinating with recruitment specialists in CNR and partner colleges and ensuring ENVFY has an active presence in relevant yield events on campus and off.
  • Supervise and direct the ENVFY Coordinator of Student Success, ENV 100 instructors, and student workers and other personnel who are directly responsible for ENVFY student recruitment, academic advising, and engagement activities.
  • Contribute to ENVFY Teaching and Advising Graduate Apprenticeship program, supporting graduate students to develop collegiate teaching and advising skills.
  • Advance the success and utility of the ENVFY program by working with the ENVFY Director to build and cultivate relationships with other colleges, first-year programs, the Division of Academic and Student Affairs (DASA), Registration and Records, and the Graduate School.
  • Collaborate with Advising Coordinators in participating colleges to facilitate timely advisor assignments and other academic advising administrative matters.
  • Coordinate with the ENVFY Director and the CNR Academic Affairs Office to develop program success metrics and utilize them to conduct program assessment and annual reporting.
  • Participate in the university community in ways that are strategic to the ENVFY mission.
  • Responsible for overseeing program operations in the absence of the ENVFY Director.
  • Anticipate needs and foresee potential problems and conflicts that could impact success for ENVFY students; use discretion, program knowledge, judgment, and independent research to propose and facilitate solutions.
  • Lead special projects where necessary and appropriate and assist with other projects.

Other Responsibilities

  • Participate in ongoing professional development training and workshops to remain up-to-date regarding degree requirements and policies as well as best practices in advising, instruction, and student support.
  • Occasional participation in activities in the evening and on weekends.
  • Maintain compliance with all relevant policies, procedures, standards, and laws.
  • Treat confidential information with discretion and care.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of ENVFY or the CNR Director of Student Success and Academic Services.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Require post-baccalaureate credentials in student development, counseling, or in an environmental discipline and at least 5 years of undergraduate academic advising experience. A bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience in student development or related disciplines may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.
  • An advanced degree in an environmental discipline, counseling, student development, or related fields plus at least 5 years of undergraduate academic advising experience is required.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to lead staff, advisors, and students through the intricacies, process, and comprehension of matriculation and graduation requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively advise undergraduate students regarding cross-curricular programs and policies using the NACADA Core Competencies, and to support students in problem-solving their academic affairs and developing an educational plan
  • Demonstrated understanding of developmental needs of undergraduate students, especially those in transition, and the ability work with students to evaluate complex educational plans and to develop meaningful options
  • Comfort with a proactive and intrusive style of advising
  • Demonstrated competence with being inclusive of various perspectives, identities, backgrounds, developmental stages, and career interests of undergraduate students
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise critical interpersonal skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and administration
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively, both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Demonstrated ability to provide effective teaching and/or program development and delivery skills
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills and use of technologies such as Google Suite
  • Demonstrated ability to assist in providing effective academic and student success services and to maintain a confidential environment, when appropriate
  • At least 5 years of academic advising experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with NC State academic programs
  • Experience with cross-curricular and/or first year academic advising
  • Experience in working with undergraduate students in transition and students with academic difficulty
  • Teaching experience at the college level, particularly with first-year undergraduate students
  • Experience in a leadership or supervisory role, managing teams, and/or coordinating projects
  • Experience in working with students in environmental majors
  • Experience with program assessment
  • At least one degree or work experience in an environmental discipline
  • Demonstrated ability to build collaborative partnerships with other units across campus
  • Experience in strategic planning for student support services and the ability to develop and implement student engagement programs and activities
