The Engineering & Applied Physics team at Vertex, San Diego is looking to add a top-notch Electrical Engineer to our small, elite team of engineers and physicists. From advanced robotics and automation to microfluidics and cutting-edge microscopy, this unique in-house team develops a wide array of performance focused technological solutions for the toughest challenges in drug discovery. Where commercial options don't exist, the team collaborates directly with Vertex scientists to create innovative solutions that enable ground-breaking science and discovery of life-saving medicines. The Electrical Engineer plays a key role not only in developing custom hardware and firmware to run our instruments, but also ensures effective integration with our scientists to maximize the impact we have on drug discovery.

This is a 5 day/week onsite position at our San Diego (Torrey Pines) research site.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver creative, innovative, effective solutions to challenging engineering problems

  • Develop custom electronics, including analog/digital circuitry related to signal conditioning, signal processing, data acquisition, automation, electro-mechanical, electro-optical and RF

  • Collaborate with lab scientists and the engineering team to define new instrument and design requirements

  • Design, build, deploy and support custom instrumentation in Vertex labs with minimal oversight

  • Administer hardware system bring up activities

  • Supervise technicians from prototype to production builds of custom instrumentation

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

  • Experienced electronics designer with high proficiency in design of signal processing, signal conditioning, data acquisition, automation, electro-mechanical, electro-optical, RF, robotics, instrumentation in medical/industrial/military applications

  • Solid experience with sensor transducers, filter design, analog and digital circuitry, power supplies, transceivers, microprocessors, programmable logic devices, RF design concepts and circuit simulation

  • Proficient with Altium Designer, Altium365, ECAD to MCAD extensions, BOM and Component Libraries

  • Experience with Xilinx FPGA's or VHDL/ Verilog/ Open CL

  • Solid experience with I2C, SPI, UART and CAN bus communication protocols

  • Some programming experience in either Python, C, C++ in context of embedded microcontrollers

  • High proficiency with Function Generators, Oscilloscopes, Logic Analyzers and Vector Network Analyzers

  • Experience with a wide variety of electronic fabrication techniques, including PCB soldering of SMT components, wire harness assembly, wire terminations and crimping tools

  • Aptitude for hands-on work with complex electro-mechanical systems

  • Exceptional multitasking and communication skills, with a keen attention to detail

  • Able to transition seamlessly and productively between independent work and collaboration in diverse, cross-discipline, cross-functional teams

  • Has a passion for science and engineering with a desire to tangibly apply that passion in the pursuit of transforming the lives of patients with serious diseases

  • A compulsive problem solver; able to deliver innovative, effective solutions to challenging problems, in a high-paced, highly productive, and collaborative work environment

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor/Masters of Science degree in electrical engineering or equivalent

  • 8+ years' experience developing sophisticated electronic hardware; with emphasis on electronic hardware development including system design, simulation, embedded software, setup and complex troubleshooting

Pay Range:

$133,280 - $199,920

Disclosure Statement:

The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
