 We have highly skilled and creative faculty who incorporate the latest teaching approaches and technology into their instructional delivery. The Nursing department boasts a highly credentialed faculty with 11 Certified Nurse Educators and 8 faculty with nursing specialty certifications. Our faculty work closely with students inside and outside of the classroom to help them maximize their success. Faculty serve as advisors to the Nursing Student Association club and the Alpha Delta Nu Honor Society for associate degree nursing.  Nursing department faculty are also highly engaged in scholarly projects related to clinical simulation and clinical judgment. Our faculty have presented at the National League for Nursing, Organization of Associate Degree Nursing, and International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning national conferences. 

Recruiting for 4 Medical-Surgical Nursing Faculty positions.

Faculty support student success through a focus on individual and group faculty advising, collaboration with the nursing retention coordinator, and an emphasis on multi-modal teaching to meet students’ diverse learning styles. Faculty approach teaching as a collaborative endeavor built on a foundation of interactional relationships. As such, faculty use adult learning theory to approach their teaching and act as role models and facilitators for students. Our faculty teach a range of face-to-face, hybrid, and blended classes. Using both synchronous and asynchronous modes of instructional delivery, our faculty focus on student engagement and success through critical thinking, analytical and hands-on approaches. CSM faculty are expected to be knowledgeable of learning management systems in addition to face-to-face and innovative technology-based instructional delivery approaches.  As such, we are seeking innovative educators to join our Nursing faculty in the area of Medical-Surgical Nursing.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

The successful faculty member will teach 15 credit hours per semester and 30 credit hours per academic year of day, evening or weekend classes. Flexibility is required to work in this position as teaching assignments may vary from semester to semester.  There may be an opportunity to teach classes in the summer also. Faculty may be assigned to teach on the Regional Hughesville campus or any campus or center where CSM offers classes. Faculty may also be assigned to teach courses for the CSM Early College program. Students taking Early College classes are dually enrolled in their local high school while also completing courses at CSM towards a certificate or degree. The faculty member hired in this position is responsible for the coordination, planning, preparation, presentation, and evaluation of classroom instruction and related activities to promote student-centered learning and success.  At a minimum, the related activities include instruction, holding office hours, serving on various committees, and demonstrating a commitment to professional development thorough participating in local, state, regional, and national professional activities and organizations.  
 
 In addition, this faculty member may coordinate various aspects of the College of Southern Maryland’s nursing courses, including such activities as mentoring, observing, and evaluating adjunct faculty, and fielding student feedback regarding department, course and program questions and concerns.  Other responsibilities may include acting as a liaison to various clinical facilities, coordination of clinical experiences, management of student background and health data, and contributions to student learning outcomes assessment processes.
 
 DUTIES AND STANDARDS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:    
  

  • Teach 30 credits of courses per contract year in the Nursing discipline
  • Teach a range of courses that may include morning, day, evening, weekend or online, in an accelerated format. Opportunities may exist to teach in summer
  • Design assignments that incorporate students’ program of study and connect to the Nursing discipline 
  • Engage students in their learning through active and collaborative learning approaches
  • Meet with students outside of class to assist them with being successful college students
  • Incorporate culturally relevant pedagogies into the teaching and learning process
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret information
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver instruction to diverse student populations, with varied levels of learning and preparation 
  • Knowledge and use of student engagement strategies that support completion and student success goals
  • Demonstrated experience providing feedback students can use to improve their performance
  • Experience developing or using Open Education Resource (OER) materials as an instructional tool
  • Maintain an ongoing program of professional development and participate in professional organizations, workshops, seminars, conferences and activities
  • Exhibit emotional control and stability
  • Stress management and coping ability
  • Mastery of appropriate computer operation skills
  • Operate a motor vehicle for travel to other campuses 

Minimum Education and Training

  • Master’s Degree in Nursing required
  • Registered nurse (RN) in Maryland, or ability to obtain Maryland RN license required
  • Two years full-time teaching experience or four years teaching as adjunct faculty member at the college level preferred.
  • Related professional experience of five (5) years clinical practice in medical-surgical nursing preferred.
  • Ability to use word processing, basic internet applications, and basic database navigation required.
  • Ability to use an educational enterprise, learning management system such as Desire2Learn to support and facilitate instructional delivery required.
  • Ability to teach in face-to-face, virtual, web and web-hybrid formats required.
