Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

This position is located in Rockville, MD at the Universities at Shady Grove (USG) -
We are seeking a dynamic, hands-on individual to oversee operations of the Innovation & Fabrication Labs located in the Biomedical Sciences and Engineering (BSE) Building.

Position Summary/representative duties: 
  • Operate and be responsible for manual and computer-controlled fabrication equipment located in the maker space.
  • Develop, document, optimize and validate standard operating procedures within each of the lab/maker spaces.
  • Handle responsibility for safety procedures, working with regulatory bodies such as Environmental Safety (ESSR) and the Fire Marshal’s office as needed.
  • Coordinate maintenance schedules. Maintain equipment; troubleshoot, document and correct system malfunctions.
  • Optimize maker space operations, working with academic partners to determine use cases, project needs, support for academic courses and extracurricular projects evaluating and implementing software and other solutions to ensure efficient work flow -Actively work with students to ensure safe operations of equipment, provide skills instruction, and advise on component design and construction, including issues such as part geometry, selection of materials, tolerances, etc.
  • Coordinate Lab Use: Schedule, train, mentor and qualify lab users including campus and partner staff and student staff on various systems and equipment.
  • Coordinate software maintenance and upgrades, and any other IT resources with USG IT staff
  • Operate Lab Equipment: Manufacture and fabricate parts, assemblies, testing and research apparatuses; optimize manufacturing processes and operate a broad range of equipment with a focus on quick turnaround prototyping; operate FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) and other 3-D equipment; operate laser cutting equipment; operate subtractive equipment, drill presses, bandsaws, etc.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, or an equivalent* combination of education and experience.

Experience:
  • Minimum 1-2 years of relevant experience in a manufacturing or machine shop environment (preferably with additive manufacturing equipment and/or subtractive manufacturing equipment).
  • Experience in the use and maintenance of machine tools and prototyping equipment including, but not limited to: hand tools, power tools, drill presses.
    *6 years total related experience with HS or GED; 4 years of related experience with Associate’s degree.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of establishing safety and training procedures.
  • Skilled in completing projects from initial designs to final fabrication.
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to resolve challenging technical problems.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Ability to execute multiple projects, and meet scheduled milestones and deliverables on time with high quality outputs.
  • Knowledgeable about other maker spaces and equipment to advise users of additional resources that may be available for specific projects.

Preferences:

Preferenes:
  • Experience using Solidworks, MasterCam, and/or CAD/CAM software.
  • Experience in the use and maintenance of machine tools and prototyping equipment including, but not limited to: band saws, lathes, knee mills, and CNC milling machines
  • Experience with, and knowledge of, mechanical design, fabrication, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience in technical writing, specifically onboarding, standard operating procedures, and safety plans.
  • Experience across multiple disciplines of engineering.
