Campus Safety Officer

 

Hours: This is a 3rd shift position 10:00pm-6:00am

JOB SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Director of Campus Safety or designee, the Campus Safety Officer contributes to providing a safe and secure learning and working environment for all members of the Spalding University community, as well as for its guests and visitors.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Patrol campus buildings and grounds, by vehicle, or on foot, on a continuous basis in order to identify and assess situations that may impact the safety and security of the University community.
  • Perform tasks to ensure building security, such as locking and unlocking doors, closing windows, setting alarms and turning lights off and on.
  • Monitor campus-wide access control, building alarms and video surveillance systems.
  • Write and submit incident reports.
  • Maintain documentation pertaining to shift activities.
  • Escort individuals from buildings to and from their vehicles as requested.
  • Identify and report actions or situations which may present a hazard to public safety, physical security, and/or public welfare.
  • Respond to fire and trouble alarms.
  • Respond to requests for assistance; administer basic first aid/CPR according as needed.
  • Act as a first responder to all campus emergencies, both medical and criminal.
  • Enforce all University policies, including those related to student conduct.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Participate in staff training activities in order to maintain current knowledge of essential campus safety practices and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SKILLS AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of hiring.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check.
  • One (1) year of law enforcement, campus safety or security experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, whether security-related or not, as determined by the Director of Campus Safety or designee

Licenses and Certifications

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, valid CPR and First Aid certifications
  • Valid drivers license and a safe driving record.

Demonstrate an ability to utilize sound judgement, lead with confidence, and effectively communicate with individuals and groups during stressful situations.

Commit to managing incidents in a courteous, impartial, and patient but appropriately authoritative, manner.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Responding to emergencies and maintaining peace in various campus settings involves frequent travel between locations. Appropriate response may include exposure to outdoor weather conditions, as well as significant interaction with the public.

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to walk, stand and sit for prolonged periods of time; operate a computer keyboard and two-way radio; operate a vehicle to travel to various locations throughout campus.

Vision, Speech and Hearing

Ability to see clearly; ability to perceive colors; ability to see and read text and data; ability to speak English clearly and be understood; ability to hear in normal conversation when using a telephone or two-way radio.
