Position Overview
The Public Safety Corporal position is the assistant shift supervisor and field-training officer; they provide the leadership, supervision & training for subordinate public safety personnel & student workers during shifts and special events in order to ensure proper functioning of day-to-day public safety operations. Patrols campus property and buildings by foot, vehicle, and/or bike; responds to calls for assistance, fire, burglary alarms, and emergencies on campus; completes and files reports. The Corporal is in charge of shift in the absence of the Sergeant or a higher-ranking officer.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent with a minimum of three years experience in law enforcement, security, emergency medical technician, firefighter, or US military service.
- Satisfactory completion of an approved police/law enforcement training academy or security officer training.
- Must be able to prepare, understand and correct incident, investigation, and operational reports.
- Flexibility and ability to work any shift, any day of the week.
- Willingness and ability to work scheduled & non-scheduled and overtime hours.
- Must have demonstrated excellent customer service, communication, and de-escalation skills.
- Must have demonstrated experience working with a diverse community and committed to inclusive excellence.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
- Must have demonstrated effective communication skills and the ability to perform well under pressure.
- Must be able to carry out the required physical demands necessary to fulfill duties.
- A satisfactory background check and MVC check are required.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Bachelors or Associates Degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Sociology or a related field desired but not necessary. A Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Sociology or a related field can be used as a one-year equivalent for one year of public safety or security experience.
