Biology - Wastewater Monitoring Laboratory Technician

Job Description

The person in this role is responsible for day-to-day operation of wastewater monitoring of potential pathogens on Hope College’s campus and other sites throughout Southwest Michigan as part of an overall testing strategy for SARS-CoV-2. The person performs all laboratory activities related to monitoring, including in field sample acquisition, in laboratory processing of samples, extraction of nucleic acids for molecular analyses and safe transport of samples to a local testing facility. The person conducts these activities in accordance with all safety guidelines and in a timely manner such that results are available on a real time basis. The person interacts with members of Hope College faculty and staff and with local partners, including public health departments.

Responsibilities:

  • High frequency (up to daily) sampling of wastewater and sample processing
  • Coordination and execution of laboratory activities, including preparatory, chemical and molecular biology techniques
  • Adherence to all safety guidelines in field and laboratory settings
  • Interaction with local partners

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in science
  • Excellent time management skills, ability to communicate effectively, and attention to detail
  • Experience in a field and laboratory setting
  • Experience in molecular biology techniques
  • Make and record scientific observations accurately, prepare and present scientific records and reports and observe safety precautions
  • Must be able to work under little or no supervision, be prompt and deliver on daily requirements for sample acquisition and processing
  • Valid driver’s license

Physical Demands

This position requires remaining in a sitting or standing position for frequent periods of time; uses office machinery such as a computers, printers, copy machines; Occasionally involves moving items over 10 pounds; frequently will move between different offices/workspaces/buildings; and requires effective communication abilities.
